The City of Ushuaia

city

Ushuaia

“Ushuaia is the capital city of the province, placed in front of the Beagle channel and surrounded by the Martial Mountains, along the bay that gave it its name. It has been translated as “the bay that penetrates west”.

The combination of mountains, forest and sea makes of it a unique city in Argentina. An irregular topography imprints a pictoresque appearance, adding the colorful houses made mainly of wood and corrugated iron. It is surrounded by a series of Natural Protected Areas and is the most active gateway to Antarctica.

At present the population is estimated in over 70,000 inhabitants (National Census 2010: 56,825 inhabitants).

It is the southernmost urban area in the world, a source of inspiration and challenges, land of myths and legends made up for centuries, even for those who have never been to the south of the south.”

Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego

“Nearly 500 years ago, a group of explorers from the Old World approached the coast of an unknown land for the first time.

Dispersed fires and columns of smoke from the natives seemed to float upon the waters, in the mist of dawn: this mystical setting probably gave the island its name, Land of Fire. What once was a remote and inhospitable place today attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

Adventure, emotion, history and legend: find out all that the island has to offer.

See the Southern fires for yourself and light up your imagination…”

If you want to learn more about this interesting land, there is lots of useful information at the Fuegino Institute of Tourism (where this exerpt was taken from), including weather, wildlife, and even what clothing you should bring with you.

International DTS: January 2011

November 27, 2010 in News

Caminando

Which path are you going to choose?

Our next International Discipleship Training School (DTS) starts on the 24th of January, 2011. Many people are called to missions and know this in their heart, but few are sent and few choose the path that lies before them. The DTS not only equips you for missions, but also gives you tools to help you go.

If you have a heart for missions, or a desire to know God’s will for you, then the DTS is for you.

The DTS is for those who want to grow in God. It is for those who are willing to learn, willing to become uncomfortable, to seek the best that God has for them. It is for those who are already obeying God and want to head out to the mission field.

This is not for everybody. It is not for the “know-it-alls”, or for those that are not willing to walk in humility. It is not for those who want to escape their current situation either; it is not a rehabilitation centre. It is a missionary training school for those who love God and want to know Him more and make Him known to all the world.

We do not pretend to know everything. We love God and want to make Him known. Together we are going to grow, we are going to work, and we are going to live. Just as iron sharpens iron, we are going to sharpen each other and we are going to learn to love one another in Christ.

This is the DTS.

Yes, you are going to grow, and you are going to learn. You are going to love the DTS and the changes that you will see in yourself by the end. Most of all, you will never regret the time you spent doing your DTS. It is invaluable.

Kings Kids

King's Kids

In March, 2011 we began Kings Kids, a new ministry in the city for both youth and children. Kings Kids looks to mobilize young people through camps and outreaches, giving them opportunities to share their faith with others and to participate in extending the Kingdom of God. Kings Kids also offers discipleship programs that help young people and their families to maintain and grow in their relationship with God.

Discipleship School 2010

January 1, 2010 in News

The year 2010 is a year of many new things in the Lord, and we believe that our new Discipleship Training School is going to reflect this.

Working as a team

Starting on the 21st of January 2010, the DTS is a school designed to bring you into a deeper and stronger relationship with the Lord. It has three months of teaching before leaving for a further two months of intense practical outreach. Both phases build character, understanding of God and others, and develop your abilities to work alongside of others and in teams. It is a life changing school that you will remember always, for the rest of your life.

Doing a DTS in Ushuaia adds a quality that you will not find in other places.

There is a lot of green in Ushuaia

Ushuaia is known as the southernmost city in the world, and as such the weather ranges from cool to cold, with plenty of snow during the winter months (Christmas is summertime down here). Do not worry about the cold, as every building is centrally heated and very warm. The city centre of Ushuaia is compact but the city, trapped between the Beagle Channel and the snow capped mountains to the north, is spread out along the coastline. There are currently 75,000 inhabitants living in Ushuaia, but this swells during both the winter months with skiing tourism, and the summer months with many cruise ships visiting the city.

A group of pioneer missionaries were the first to arrive at this place that is now known as Ushuaia. In the history of Ushuaia, therefore, there is a strong Christian legacy that continues to influence our city even today.

Snow remains on the mountain tops.

Following in their footsteps, the YWAM base of Ushuaia is also pioneering. Although it is small, it is filled with passion for God. The staff working here are all pioneers who are helping to establish the growing ministry down here. Each one has a heart for God and a desire to see every student grow in their faith and love for God and others. Being a small base, you will have the opportunity to get to know each one of us, work alongside of us, and learn from us in a way that is normally not possible in larger bases.

If you feel God calling you to do your DTS, perhaps Ushuaia is the place for you. There is really no better place that you could choose to do a DTS than here. Listen to God, listen to your heart, but most of all, make a decision and stick with it.

Welcome to YWAM Ushuaia

December 20, 2008 in News

We are working in Ushuaia to bring the presence of Youth with a Mission here. Our desire is to bless this city and all of the churches, working to fulfill the great commission of Christ and be true to our roots of:

Knowing God and Making Him Known

Ushuaia city

There are many people praying to see YWAM Ushuaia raised up, and Richard Warren is currently living in Ushuaia, preparing everything needed to make this a reality. One of our challenges is that of running a Discipleship Training School (DTS) and with much excitement we can now announce that we will have…

The First DTS in Ushuaia starting in January 2009!

A Task for the Valiant

December 20, 2008 in News

As the date for the DTS School gets closer, the team that will lead the school are gathering here in Ushuaia. Silvina Prado, the director of the school shared these words with us:

We have a lot of expectation about what God is doing here at the ends of the earth. A long time ago God spoke about His intention to light up this land with a fire that would not go out and that will extend out to the rest of the world.

We are here to see and be part of the fulfillment of His promise.

“This is a task for the valiant only”

We challenge all of you who understand that you have an active role in this time, to unite with us and be part of the transformation that God is going to bring over Ushuaia and the nations.

It’s Over: The DNA Intensive Winter School

August 1, 2008 in News

The DNA Intensive Winter School is now finished and it was a great success. There was a great number that attended the school and many were impacted greatly during the week of impacting teaching in the classes. Some people were able to forgive for the first time, letting go of all of the anger and hate that had built up over the years and releasing such a change in them that even their face changed noticeably.

Many commented after and during the school of just how much it had impacted them, and how they felt so dramatically changed by these things that they would never be the same again.

The people who attended the school ranged from school aged to grandparents, and included leaders and pastors. It was a blessing to see just how much each one took from their time in our DNA Intensive Winter School.
