YWAM Austral or YWAM Ushuaia is based in the southernmost city in the world, known as “The End of the World”. It was established in the summer of 2008 by our resident pioneer, Rix Warren accompanied by Silvina Prado and two helpers, who helped to run the first DTS school at the beginning of 2009. A small family-sized base, it provides a great atmosphere for intimate learning, powerful discipleship, and solid friendships.

YWAM Austral will refer to all of the Youth with a Mission bases that are established in the very deep south of South America. Although YWAM Ushuaia is our first base here, there are future plans for other bases in this area. The word Austral refers to “south”, hence words such as Australia (known as the great south land), Australasia (southern Asia), and Australis (early money of Argentina, a southern country in South America).

YWAM Ushuaia is still growing. After years of prayer and a long time working with the churches and people in Ushuaia, our first Discipleship Training School (DTS) started in January 2009.

A Continuing Legacy
The first people to settle Ushuaia were missionaries, coming here to bless the people and the land. Unfortunately they found the place to be very cold and a misunderstanding with the local natives forced them to find refuge in a cave. Despite their best efforts these missionaries died of starvation while waiting for their greatly delayed supply ship. It arrived several months after their deaths.

To develop and train missionaries and send them out to the rest of the world is an answer to one of their prayers, and a continuation of the work that they were involved in. Already teams have gone out from Ushuaia to places such as Indonesia, India, and Africa with plans to reach many more countries. Ushuaia is an international city, with people from all parts of the world welcome here to train and continue in this legacy.

One of the primary words that we received from God during the early phases of praying into YWAM Ushuaia came from the prophet Ezekiel. Based upon this word we understand that there is a connection between the south and the north, and that our presence in Ushuaia helps to establish that connection…

Ezekiel 20:45-48
(45) Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (46) “Son of man, set your face toward Teman, and speak out against the south and prophesy against the forest land of the Negev, (47) and say to the forest of the Negev, ‘Hear the word of the LORD: thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am about to kindle a fire in you, and it will consume every green tree in you, as well as every dry tree; the blazing flame will not be quenched and the whole surface from south to north will be burned by it. (48) “All flesh will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.

There have been many prophecies declaring that a world-wide revival shall come from the south, and many of these point to Ushuaia. The prophecies also state that there will be people sent from Ushuaia to all parts of the world where they will start new fires (of revival). We are excited as YWAM Ushuaia to be present here, working toward the fulfillment of this prophecy.
